Embodied Coaching

Welcome to the most powerful healing I have experienced. Based on the work of Eva Beronius, this is a unique combination of parts-work and embodied practise.

Eva’s words about her journey that led to this method:

“I too started doing the work from my head, rejected parts of myself that I thought needed fixing, and was disconnected from my body and emotions. Growing awareness and understanding of what was going on in my inner world took me a long way, but at a certain point, I hit a ceiling.

“My deepest-rooted nervous system reactions like freeze, and feeling unsupported and alone, were still there. My willingness to fumble and try new things led me to find out where I had been getting stuck.”

Wherever you are in your journey, embodied coaching will give you more understanding and compassion for yourself and real shifts from patterns you feel stuck in.

Many people like me, and the people who gravitate towards me, are very much in their heads, constantly thinking about (and analysing) everything. Here’s where embodied coaching is different. It will take you out of your head and into your body. This is a very over-used expression but to understand why it’s important “to be in your body” is to realise firstly that you can’t heal from an activated state. Being out of your head and in your body will take you out of your activated state. Secondly, until an emotion is expressed, it can’t move through you. To express your emotion, to properly FEEL it, you need to feel it in your body, not just think about it in your head. You can relive, reactivate your emotions as much as you like in your head and they will still be there the next time you want to dig them up. But if you can properly express and feel your emotions in a supportive environment, they will start to shift. You may need to visit them more than once but they will shift, and that’s a lasting change.

We all have multiple “parts” within us. Most of us understand the concept of the inner judge or critic, and we can consider this a “part”. We may also understand the concept of an inner child, another part. Often these parts are very young and  we all have hurt or “wounded” parts that act up when we’re hurt or angry and make us act in ways we’d rather not. Most of us grew up in a society that doesn’t welcome the expression of hurt or anger, so when such a part is activated, we often have other parts that come up and try to quiet the wounded part or try to make it go away. We can call these parts “protector” parts. Whilst all these parts are ultimately trying to protect you, they are often in conflict with each other and will get in the way of what you want to achieve in life.

In order to heal our parts and stop the patterns of behaviour we’re desperate to change, we need to meet these parts and allow them to express the original hurt. This is not a unique concept in coaching, however what many modalities disregard is that in order to meet the wounded part, you need to get past the protectors. You can’t heal a part when you’re identified with it, and you can’t heal a part that is being defended by the protector – you have to meet and soothe the protector part first, to get past it.

Through embodied coaching you will be guided to identify when you’re acting from a part, then dis-identify from the part using nervous system regulation to get in to a calm and embodied state. From there, you can meet the part. You’ll learn to support and soothe these parts in an aligned state, so they feel safe to express their emotions. You’ll feel the emotions in your body, knowing that it is safe to do so and allow them to finally heal.

All sessions are offered on Zoom, with video.

Please ensure you won’t be disturbed and that you aren’t worried about being overheard to allow you to fully express yourself. The more open you are to digging deep and being vulnerable, the more you’ll get out of the sessions.

You’ll be offered a supportive space to talk about the issues you’re facing. Once Kate has a feeling for what’s going on you’ll be encouraged to examine the parts of you that are active in your story. You may be guided to regulate your nervous system if you’re activated (we often are when we talk about our stories) through breathing or other techniques. In time you will meet your parts and allow them to express what they’re feeling and meet their needs. What happens will depend on what comes up, and how ready you are to dis-identify with the part and meet it from an embodied, regulated state.

You can prepare by being in a quiet place with no distractions and no fear of being overheard. You want to be able to relax fully.
